What a difference a year makes

Almost exactly one year ago I wrote a little post over at AndroidSPIN on the possibility of T-Mobile going belly up, based on the prediction of 24/7 Wall St. At the time of that writing, I was playing devil’s advocate. Sure T-Mo wasn’t doing great, but I was confident in the magenta underdog. But as we’ve all seen what has come to pass, holy crap they were right! Well, mostly right. Everyone it seems expected Sprint to make the offer;  AT&T being the buyer stunned just about everyone.

Other notables on the extinction list were Blockbuster, which is on the way out, and RadioShack, which seems to still be doing okay. As for the 2012 list, it’s quite possible one or more of the following companies will be gone come this time next year:

  • Sony Pictures
  • A&W
  • Saab
  • American Apparel (I’ll actually be surprised if they’re around)
  • Sears (Doubt it)
  • Sony Ericsson (Not if they stick with Android)
  • Kellogg’s Corn Pops (Say Wha?!?)
  • MySpace
  • Soap Opera Digest
  • Nokia (lolz)

The week in review

This week sucked of epic proportions. Last weekend I was in Austin, Texas for the big Android BBQ. While I had a fantastic time there, from the moment I left I experienced a steady stream of stress-inducing events, the biggest of which was losing my bag after I was forced to check it due to lack of stowage space on the plane.  To make matters worse, once I did get my bag back, I discovered some thieving piece of shit decided to take some of my possessions.

Now, I’m not going rehash all of the details. I’ve spent the whole week being extremely stressed out, and most of this weekend replacing my stolen property. I’m finally starting to relax and feel like things are getting back to the normal ebb and flow, and just want to move on.

It was however, a jarring reminder that when it comes down to it, you should always look out for you own interests, as the world cannot be counted on.

Unity comes in all forms

I think I have a Woodchuck problem

Taken with Android FxCamera App

In my defense, those were purchased over many weeks, and I did not drink them all myself.

Lots of little things.

  • I’m normally the first one in line to say spending double digits on a key chain is ridiculous waste of money, but the nerd in me is squealing in delight. SHINY!
  • I stopped at a Barnes and Noble earlier tonight and got to play with a demo Nook.  It looked pretty good though I wish the whole unit was a touchscreen and not just the bottom. Loved some of the Nook cases. Maybe in a couple upgrades or so it will be developed enough to get me to cave and buy one.
  • My local grocery has Vanilla Coke again, but only in 12-pack cans. The most expensive form available. Fuck you, Coke.
  • I’m officially taking a break (does it count as a break when I haven’t picked it up in over a month?) from Moby Dick, and reading Spook Country as it’s on a loan.  I don’t know anything about it, other than the cover states it was a New York Times best seller. Twilight was a best seller too, and we all know a big pile of steaming shit that was.
  • Life happenings are necessitating a cell plan upgrade to family status. Definitely going with another Android, but I’m undecided if I want to go with a current model or wait a month or two for the new models to come out. The Nexus One is impressive, but they’re currently experiencing the same thing Iphone early adopters had, so I’m passing on that for now.
